Suspects and officers who died in a shooting of CDC in Atlanta – NBC Los Angeles

Authorities said the man fired outside the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Friday, leaving bullets in windows across the vast campus, killing officers before killing them, authorities said.

The attack, which unfolded near the neighbouring Emory University campus, prompted a massive law enforcement response to one of the nation’s most prominent public health agencies, but no other injuries have been reported.

DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose, 33, was killed while responding to the shooting, the police department said. Rose, the father of two, is a third of father and has been at the police station since September.

“He has committed to serving the community,” Interim Police Chief Greg Padrick said in a statement. “At this point we are seeking community prayers for his family, his friends, his loved ones, and the entire DeKalb County Police Department.”

Director Susan Monares said in a post in X that at least four CDC buildings were attacked. Images shared by employees showed multiple agency buildings with windows with bullets on display, highlighting the extent of damage to sites where thousands of scientists and staff are working on critical disease research.

Atlanta Police Chief Darling Siebaum said he received a 911 call about an active shooter around 4:50pm on 1600 Clifton Road, just in front of the CDC campus. Emory University sent active shooting alerts to its Atlanta campus, lifting it up about an hour and a half later.

When officers responded to the scene, Cielbaum said he discovered Rose had been seriously injured. Rose later died of injuries caused by a bullet wound, Padrick said.

Schierbaum said officers heard gunshots inside their resume at the intersection and entered the building to try to find the shooter.

The gunman was found on the second floor of a building across the street from the CDC campus and was killed at the scene, Cielbaum said. He added, “At this point, I don’t know if it was from an officer or if it was self-harm.”

The motives of the shooters are still unknown early in the investigation, according to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.

When 92 children were at a daycare on the CDC campus in Atlanta, the shooting took place nearby, Dickens said.

Deli staff near the campus locked the door and hid inside. General Muir’s Chief Operating Officer Brandi Girard said the staff inside had heard a series of gunshots.

“It sounded like the fireworks went out one after the other,” she said.

Monales said Monday is a remote working day for all CDC employees, so government agencies can conduct security assessments before workers return to the office. In her X post, she refers to the filming as an “attack on our royal campus” and refers to the office complex.

“As we navigate the aftermath of this event, we want to express our eternal gratitude to the injured law enforcement officials and share the deep sadness of dol with the family and friends of DeKalb County police officers killed in their duties,” she wrote in an email sent to employees.

The CDC and Emory main campuses are surrounded by wealthy forested areas of northeast Atlanta. All three agencies line up along Clifton Road. The area is difficult to access and is well known for its traffic chokes, but there was little evidence, as the warning siren was bladed on Friday.

“Twice this week, crazy criminals are targeting innocent Georgians,” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said in X.

He said, “helpfully thanking the “brave first responders” who rushed towards danger to subduing shooters and save lives, and reminded them how important they were.

“We’re hoping to join us in embracing them in our prayers, along with those who were hurt tonight near the CDC Center,” he said.

According to military officials, an active soldier fired fire at a Georgia Army Post in Georgia Army Post, kept by witnesses and wounded five service members before being detained.

Brig. General John Levas, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, held a press conference following a shooting that left five wounded soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia.
