With the controversy over the rezoning effort in Texas still rage, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Friday that Golden State will move forward with plans for a special election to help its own district plan for voters to vote.
Newsom said the move was a counter punch to Texas and is being made in a transparent way, but also said Democrats are likely to win five seats if the measure was adopted. The plan will allow Democrats to temporarily bypass the state’s independent constituency committee and adopt a new map of Congress ahead of the 2026 election.
“We’re talking about emergency measures to address what’s going on in Texas, and we’re going to override what’s going on in Texas,” Newsom said at a press conference Friday that it’s adjacent to several California lawmakers and the state’s fleeing Texas Democrats.

“We pick up five seats with the consent of people. That’s the difference between the approach we take and the approach they take,” Newsmom continued. “We’re doing it temporarily. We’re doing it in a completely transparent way, and we’re doing it by asking the people of California for their consent and support.”
California will be the first democracy to actively begin the process of actively passing new Congressional district lines ahead of mid-term 2026, in response to the promotion of Texas’ district changes.
Newsom said Democrats were taking voting measures until August 22, and he justified the move against President Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
“Greg Abbott, who has no courage, does not have the backbone, but does not have the conscience of the consequences of his actions… he’s dialing now for a new seat,” Newsom said Friday.
“[Trump’s] The agenda has failed. His presidency failed. He knows headwinds in the medium term. He is dialing his seat now. ”

Encouraged by the Trump administration, Texas Republicans are pursuing a map of Congress aimed at adding up to five GOP Leaning districts, spurring fierce resentment and recoil. The Texas Democrats fled from the lonely star nation to the Democratic nation in order to break the quorum and halt the vote.
The Texas home has requested a quorum for two-thirds of members attending to do official business, and state legislators report they are expected to be absent from the state until the end of August, when the special session ends.
Democrats in Texas have argued that their state’s rezoning plans are unconstitutional, naked and partisan.
Pelosi defended the Texas strike, calling it “self-defense for our democracy.”
She said Democrats would not allow Trump to “pave” free and fair elections within the country.

Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows signed an arrest warrant for the Absent Democrat on Monday after state lawmakers approved such warrants and called on the Texas Department of Public Safety to arrest “delinquent Texas House Democrats.” Arrest warrants are considered primarily symbolic as they apply only to those within state policies.
Democrat California State Assembly President Robert Rivas said he can see the map next week.
“When these maps are released, voters will have the opportunity to digest these maps and review them for the weeks and months that lead to this election,” he said.
