President Donald Trump will use his upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to test something serious about Putin ending the war with Ukraine, NATO executive director Mark Latte said on Sunday.
Latte said the ABC “this week” and that as Trump continues to put pressure on Putin, the conference is focusing on recent secondary sanctions against countries like India that purchased Russian oil, and sending deadly weapons to Ukraine.
“Next Friday is about Putin’s tests, so it’s important to see how serious he is to end this terrible war,” Latte said.
Trump announced his first in-person meeting with Putin since Moscow launched a deadly invasion of Ukraine in 2022 on the Truth Social Post on Saturday. The leader is expected to meet in Alaska on Friday, August 15th.

In recent weeks, when asked about Putin, Trump refused to etch words. Trump said he was tired of Putin at his cabinet meeting on July 8th and saw that he could impose new sanctions on Russia.
The NATO chief called the upcoming meeting a “critical step” as it reached full-scale peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

However, Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky was not expected to attend the summit with Trump and Putin as of Sunday. Despite Zelensky’s absence, Latte said, “We need Ukraine at the table.”
“It’s about the territory,” Latte said of the upcoming meeting. “Of course it’s about security assurances, but also about the need for Ukraine to decide its own future, and the need to acknowledge that Ukraine is a sovereign nation that determines its geopolitical future, and of course there are no restrictions on its own military level.

NATO’s US ambassador Matthew Whitaker told CNN on Sunday that there was no decision at this point on whether Zelenskyy would be invited to the meeting.

When asked whether Putin could be trusted, Whitaker stated that it was an action, not a word that determines whether peace is achieved and preserved, but rather an action.
