Officials say Redondo Beach’s 911 system was kicked offline for a short period of time on Sunday following a fire at the AT&T Communications Center.
“The 911 line is currently down due to telecommunications halts in South Bay,” he posted on Facebook around 2pm on Sunday. By the next time the line had risen.
Authorities said a garbage fire that spread across the AT&T facility in Gardena and burned for five hours early Sunday morning appeared to be a source.
The flame began as a garbage fire and spread to a 300 x 200-square-foot communications building with lead-acid batteries, said Jennifer Middleton, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
More than 100 firefighters, including Hazmat, responded to the flames along the 16,200 block of South Vermont Avenue.
“They had a hard time erasing it,” she said.
Local residents were asked to evacuate in place.
No injuries have been reported and the cause is under investigation.
“It was a minimal impact,” said Redondo Beach Police Lt. Col. Justin Corte. “It didn’t appear to have affected the regular phone line. The 911 calls were intermittent.”
