The structure’s fire that broke out in the LA Harbor Gateway area has proven difficult and dangerous to contain overnight.

The Los Angeles Fire Department first said that crews were sent to the 16,000 block of Vermont Avenue at 4:30 a.m. Sunday. The first crew arrived to discover flames on the outside of the building. This measured 300 feet x 200 feet, according to preliminary estimates.

Changing the conditions led the crew to switch from offensive positions to defensive positions, the department later said.

“The firefighters have shifted to defensive fire mode due to changes in the situation. The external fires have spread to the attic,” officials said in the second of three emergency warnings regarding the incident. “A small explosion occurred [was] Showing a compromise on the roof. ”

Videos from scenes posted to the Civic App show at least one firefighter fighting the flames on the roof as a fireball explodes. The crew quickly rushed from nearby and escaped through the ladder, not appearing to be seriously injured.

Small explosions reported in early morning fire near battery storage facility in Los Angeles on August 10, 2025 (Citizens’ App) Small explosions reported in early morning fire near battery storage facility in Los Angeles on August 10, 2025.

The crew was reported to be in a defensive position at 6am after it was discovered that flames had been generated at a large battery storage facility and an underground electric storage facility.

By then, the flames were included in the one-storey section of the building. It has also been announced by the authorities that additional resources have been sent to determine structural integrity and support the dangerous atmosphere.

By 7am, white smoke was seen swirling through the sky, indicating that the crew had grabbed the flames.

No injuries were reported immediately to civilians or firefighters. It is not immediately clear what set the fire.

Hazardous materials experts have monitored the area’s air quality and water runoff, and crews from the LA Water and Power Department were also sent to the site to rule out the structure for additional safety.

The fire department confirmed that it exceeded more than 140 firefighters for five hours in defensive mode at around 11am on Sunday to completely contain the “complex fire” and mitigate safety hazards.

“Several LAFD units, including Hazmat, will remain on site to monitor and control fire and life safety hazards due to the large amount of lead-acid batteries burning during this commercial occupation,” said LAFD’s latest incident alert.
