President Donald Trump’s week will peak with a high-stakes summit with Alaska’s Russian President Vladimir Putin. There, it is expected that the two leaders will discuss the war in Ukraine and the broader state of US-Russia relations at the global stage.

The summit, scheduled for Friday, drew international scrutiny amid concerns that Washington and Moscow could attempt to mediate conditions to end the conflict without official involvement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Thank you to Zelenskyy, NATO, European leaders support his push to participate in the Trump Puutine Summit

Trump previously said Putin and Zelensky were close to a ceasefire deal, but as a result of the opposition of Ukrainians and many European allies, he showed that war-tiring Kiev must acknowledge important territory.

The Russian army currently accounts for about a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, extending from the Russian border to Crimea. It includes minerals, industry, and regions that are essential to the country’s economy, home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Both the White House and the Kremlin have admitted requests to join Zelenskyy’s talks, although formal invitations have not been expanded to Ukrainian leaders. If given a seat at the table, it marks the first in-person meeting between Zelensky and Putin since the Kremlin began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The summit shows little indication that Russian wars will fall into the third and fifth months, with Moscow eroding Ukrainian sovereignty and abandoning efforts to reassert the territorial influence of the former Soviet empire.

Putin’s allies warn that “Titanic efforts” are ongoing to sink the Trump Summit over the Ukrainian War

In a statement on Saturday, the Kremlin said Trump and Putin are expected to “focus on discussing options to achieve a long-term peaceful solution.” The Kremlin added that “they will be a clear, challenging process, but we will be actively and energetically involved in it,” the statement added.

“The United States has the power to force Russia to negotiate seriously.”

Over the weekend, several European leaders expressed support for Zelenskyy’s promotion to attend this week’s summit. This has led to growing concerns that Kyiv’s long-term security could be negotiated without directly involved.

The leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Finland and the European Commission said in a joint statement that the diplomatic solution mediated between Trump and Putin must support security interests in both Ukraine and Europe.

Zelenskyy will not give up territory for peace agreements ahead of Trump Petin Summit

“The US has the power to force Russia to seriously negotiate,” Kaja Karas, the head of foreign policy for the European Union, told Reuters on Sunday. “The contract between the US and Russia must include Ukraine and the EU. That’s the issue of Ukraine and the safety of Europe,” she added.

NATO Executive Director Mark Latte also expressed his support for Zelenskyy’s attendance at the meeting, calling the summit an opportunity to measure how serious Putin is in “ending this horrifying war.”

Zelenskyy thanked the European leaders for their support, saying, “The end of the war must be fair.”

“We are grateful to all who are standing with our people today with Ukraine for the peace in Ukraine, defending the important security interests of our European countries,” he said.
