Crown Heights, Brooklyn (WPIX) – Three people have been killed and eight people have been injured in a shooting at a club in the club district of Crown Heights, according to the NYPD.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish said the shooting took place at a “crowded club” called Taste of the City on Franklin Avenue.
Three men, ages 19, 27 and 35, were killed in gunfire. Three women and six men, ages 19 to 61, were shot dead and taken to an area hospital, police said. They suffered life-threatening injuries.
Police initially reported 11 casualties, but updated the number early Sunday afternoon.
Investigators believe four shooters are involved, but they have not arrested them, Tish said. Tisch has been updated from the original report that at least 42 shots were fired from multiple guns and 36 shots were fired.
According to Tisch, the shooting that appeared to be gang-related came after a conflict at the club. In a statement to Nexstar’s WPIX, the owner of Taste of the City Lounge said he is fully working with law enforcement.
“At this point, our hearts are in families who have lost loved ones and wounded. We are devastated by this tragedy and affecting everyone in prayer,” the owner said.
Locals told WPIX that shootings are not uncommon in the area, but the scale is extraordinarily large.
“In general, there’s always gunfires and there’s always that kind of fight and that kind of thing,” the local said. “But that kind of thing, it’s crazy. It’s probably the worst.”
“It’s a terrible shoot that happened in New York City,” Tish said in a Sunday morning news briefing.
But the shooting comes amid a record year of gun violence in New York City.
“So, seven months after the year recorded in New York City, the number of shooting cases and shooting casualties was the lowest,” Tish said. “Of course, I am extraordinarily grateful to God for such things. What happened this morning is terrible, but I am going to go to the bottom of what I have investigated and went down.”
