Federal agents seen in video breaking windows in San Bernardino cars had refused the vehicle exit and tried to run them, the Department of Homeland Security said Sunday in a statement to NBC4 Los Angeles.
The department also said “drivers will remain large.”
The encounter, filmed on cell phone video from inside the truck, shows masked US customs and border security agents surrounding the vehicle. One of the agents is seen wearing a CBP hat.
At some point, the video shows the agent shattering the driver’s side window. After a while, the passenger side window also broke. The driver then hits the gas and as he speeds up the truck, three big pops are heard.
DHS confirmed on Sunday that those sounds were gunshots.
A department spokesperson said in a statement that the person “drived directly into the officer and hit two people in the car.” In response, the CBP was forced to discharge firearms in self-defense, according to the agency.
After the incident, San Bernardino police and federal agents went to the driver’s house where they clashed with members of the community who had gathered outside.
DHS said the driver was temporarily detained by San Bernardino police and later released.
However, San Bernardino police told NBC4 there were no records of arrests or detention related to the incident.
NBC4 asked DHS not to comment on why the driver stopped first. They also did not designate injuries to the two federal officers.
