Two Americans are dead after separate drowning incidents at a multimillion-dollar, multi-million-dollar “exclusive” holiday destination in the Bahamas, authorities say.
The own death occurred Friday on Grand Bahama Island, about 100 miles from Florida’s coast, Royal Bahama police said at their release. Both occurred in Celebration Key. This is the $600 million tourist space opened by the Carnival Cruise Line earlier this summer.
Police say the first own death occurred just before noon. The 79-year-old man was snorkeling on the beach when he found out he was unresponsive. The lifeguard pulled him out of the water and performed a CPR, but the man was eventually declared dead.
Around 2:30pm, a 74-year-old woman swimming in the pool was found to not respond. She was pulled out of the water by a lifeguard and then performed a CPR, but was declared dead as well.

Police said an autopsy was conducted and an investigation into both deaths is ongoing. Authorities have not yet announced the identities of the men or women.
In a statement to KTLA parent company Nexstar, a spokesman for Carnival Cruise Line, guests confirmed that they were traveling with their families on various ships, Mardi Gras and Carnival Elation. According to the Carnival Cruise Line website, the former usually departs from Port Canaveral, Orlando, while the latter has a route from Jacksonville, Florida.
“Our thoughts and prayers are supported by our guests, their families and our care team,” the statement added.
According to Carnival Cruise Line, the celebration key officially opened in July. The company expects around 2 million guests to visit Celebration Key each year. That number is expected to double in 2028.
