Exclusive: The State Department yankted over 6,000 student visas in 2025 in 2025 for tenure and violation of the law, including supporting terrorism.

The Trump administration has launched several initiatives aimed at cracking down on immigrants of people participating in US academic institutions and revoking visas

Those who publicly protested in support of Palestine have faced increased scrutiny, as an example, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying in May that the administration was considering visa status for students who participated in the pro-Palestinian protests.

The approximately 6,000 visas pulled were primarily due to encounters with visa overstees or law, including assistance with attacks, DUI, robbery and terrorism, the State Department told Fox News Digital.

“All student visas revoked under the Trump administration came from an individual who either broke the law or expressed support for terrorism across the United States,” a senior State Department official said in a statement in Fox News Digital. “Only around 4,000 visas have been revoked because these visitors broke the law during their visit to our country, including records of assaults and DUI.”

According to State Department officials, those who apply for a student visa for assault are faced with accusations caused by arrest or assault, about 800 students.

Those whose visas have been pulled to support the terrorist attacks – between 200 and 300 people are engaged in actions such as funding Hamas, the extremist group designated by the U.S. State Department as a terrorist organization, officials said.

Overall, the State Department told Fox News Digital that around 40,000 visas were obtained in 2025 compared to 16,000 people who were revoked in the same time frame under the Biden administration.

“Even if the previous administration is low, they still had their visa revoked,” a State Department official said. “It’s not just starting on January 20th. This has been happening for years.”

Rubio told lawmakers in May that he estimated that “thousands of” student visas had been revoked since January.

“I don’t know the latest counts, but there’s probably more to do,” Rubio told lawmakers on May 20th about the Senate Budget subcommittee, which oversees foreign affairs.

But Democrats have pushed back the Trump administration’s efforts to cancel the visa, claiming it is a violation of the legitimate process.

“I think that’s a fundamental attack on freedom, because the legitimate process is the guardian of the gates to ensure that governments don’t take away people’s lives and freedom, and if they take visas without a due process, then freedom happens.”

Student visas allow people outside the US to study at academic institutions for a certain amount of time. Unlike the green card, it allows you to already remain in the country in the United States, which is not a US citizen.

The student visa crackdown coincides with several executive orders President Donald Trump, signed in January, aims to fight anti-Semitism, with the aim of protecting the United States from foreign terrorists and other national security threats.

One of the executive orders directed the Department of State and Homeland Security, the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence to maximise and screen all aliens that are recognized, enrolled or already in the United States, particularly those that could allow aliens from regions or countries with certain security risks to be already in the United States.

Another executive order signed by Trump ordered the United States to “use available and appropriate legal tools and to prosecute, remove or otherwise retain them to account for perpetrators of illegal anti-Semitic harassment and violence.”
