President Donald Trump said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin after meeting with European leaders in the White House with Ukrainian President Voldimir Zelensky.
The president posted on his Truth Social Platform Monday evening. He said he called Putin at the end of the meeting day to begin a “conference arrangement” between the Russian president and his Ukrainian counterparts. Trump’s appeal to Putin reflected his decision to call Zelensky after the Alaska Summit and Putin on Friday.
“At the end of the meeting, I called Putin and launched a meeting arrangement between Putin and Zelensky where it was decided,” Trump confirmed media reports suggested a call.

The president added that after meetings with the two fighting presidents there will be a trilateral meeting with the United States.
“After that meeting was held, we will become two presidents as well as myself,” the president continued. “Again, this was a very good, early stage in a war that has been going on for almost four years.”
Yury Ushakov, the top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Trump and Putin had been on the phone for about 40 minutes, and according to CNN they had a “fun and very constructive” dialogue.
Putin “he expressed his support for direct negotiations between Russia and the Ukrainian delegation,” Ushakov added.

Officials familiar with Monday’s talks also reportedly found Trump’s appeal to Putin came during consultations with European leaders in the White House. Meanwhile, one of those leaders, German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, reportedly agreed to Putin in a call with Trump to meet Zelensky in two weeks.
Earlier that day, Trump was caught in a hot moment when Putin told French President Emmanuel Macron that he wanted to find a resolution to end the war in Ukraine for him.

“I think [Putin] Trump whispered to Macron in the East Room, who was preparing for Monday’s talk. “He wants to make a deal for me. As crazy as you can hear it.”
