Since Zohran Mamdani’s major upset earlier this summer, the Democratic mayoral candidate in New York City has been branded as “communist” by President Donald Trump.

Mamdani supporters who spoke with Fox News Digital at the canvas launch at Prospect Park on Sunday dismissed the period, claiming that his main victory represents more than any label.

“It’s not communism that necessarily won the New York City primary, but that he’s delivering for a more affordable New York,” said Nina, a door knocker wearing a “Zoran Educator” t-shirt. “That’s what people voted for, that’s what he won, and that’s what he’s going to win.”

Mamdani is a self-proclaimed democratic socialist recognized by progressive leaders, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt., Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez). Trump labeled him “100% communist madman” after Mamdani declared victory in June.

Another Brooklyn Canbuster, Perry, flipped the script under Mamdani’s Trump nickname, telling Fox News Digital, “Look at people who say he can’t or call him a socialist or a communist.”

Both New York City teachers Bridget and Perry shook their heads in disagreement when asked if those labels were concerned about them.

“It’s not about ideology,” said Nicholas, a mumdani supporter who volunteered at Prospect Park on Sunday for the campaign canvas launch. “We’re not trying to demonize these terms, communism and socialism. That’s frankly, I don’t think the American people have a very good idea of what exactly those terms mean.”

Nicholas said the Mamdani campaign was “a lot bigger than that.”

Of the dozens of supporters who participated in the canvas launch, many were teachers.

“I want a mayor who will stand up for my students,” Bridget said. He told Fox News Digital that he was critical of New York City, saying that he would “fight the Trump administration for the rights and security of students.”

Mamdani closed his “Five Boroughs Against Trump” tour last week across New York City, and visited the borough on Monday to spotlight how the Trump administration’s sweeping second term agenda is affecting everyday New Yorkers on key issues such as immigration and the economy.

“I have a lot of students coming from immigrant backgrounds who are worried about their own safety, their parents’ safety,” Nicholas said. “I have a child who is worried that ice agents will come to school and take them out of the classroom.”

Nicholas explained that it is very important for him to have a candidate like Mamdani who is committed to protecting the immigrant community from “what Trump and his peers are trying to do, they’re disappearing.”

“I’m here because there’s a mayor who stands up firmly and boldly,” he added. “That’s why I want Zoran to be mayor.”

Perry said he supports Mamdani, particularly because he “has a big vision for the city” for housing.

“Let’s grow big again,” Perry added, telling Fox News Digital that he loves his “brightness” and “openness.”

Mamdani has vowed to freeze rent if elected in November this year. He accused Adams of appointing rent guidelines officers to raise rents for stable apartments.

The board of directors of former Mayor Bill de Blasio voted to freeze rent three times during his tenure.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who lost the Mamadani primary, called out a socialist plan to freeze “political convenient stances,” saying such a move would hurt landowners “who can’t maintain the buildings.”

Nina said that Mamdani’s campaign includes “addressing the affordable crisis in New York City,” which will affect New Yorkers like high school students by trickle-downs.

“I’m here as an educator,” Nina said. “I would like to stay here as a New Yorker who grew up here.”

Under Mamdani’s guidance, Nina said she believes that it is possible.
