In a major step towards ending the long-standing war, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Voldimi Zelensky. White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt made the announcement at a press conference Tuesday. She made it clear that there will be a trilateral conference involving the US after the Putin Conference and the Zelensky Conference “if necessary.”
“President Trump has spoken by phone with Putin and agreed to commence the next phase of the peace process, a meeting between Putin and Zelensky. This will follow a trilateral meeting with Putin, Zelensky and President Trump,” Levitt said Tuesday.
Leavitt said Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkov “We will continue to coordinate with Russia and Ukraine to make this happen as soon as possible.”

The announcement comes a day after Zelensky and several European leaders gathered at the White House to report following the high-stakes summit with Putin in Alaska. Leavitt highlighted the praise of European leaders for Trump following the Alaska and the DC Summit.
“I think we’ve probably made more progress in the last two weeks than we’ve made in ending this war than we did in the last three and a half years,” Finland President Alexander Stubb said.
British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer reiterated his sentiment, admitting for three and a half years that “no one could bring it to this point.”

Trump calls the White House “very good, early” towards peace in Russia.
Additionally, NATO Secretary General Mark Latte thanked Trump and praised the president for defeating the “deadlock” in leading Putin to the table.
Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also praised Trump’s peace efforts.
While European leaders focused on Trump’s ability to put an end to the war, Putin issued a statement on how the brutal conflict began.

At a joint press conference after Friday’s meeting, Putin confirmed that Trump had been insisting for nearly four years. Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if Trump had not lost the 2020 election.
“I can check that,” Putin said at the end of the presser.
The statement left many people, including Fox News’ Jackie Heinrich, wondering what Trump is going to do to ensure Ukraine’s safety beyond 2028. Heinrich said Trump “understands” the need for long-term security assurances, citing the Alaska Summit following the Alaska Summit.
