This massive flea market in Southern California has its own bar

I don’t know about you, but I love farmers markets, arts and craft fairs, and vintage shops. You never know what kind of treasure you might find. I recently learned about perhaps the coolest weekly market in Los Angeles. So what’s so special about Melrose Trading Post? Let’s take a look.

Melrose Trading Post has been held every Sunday since 1997 on the campus of Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. Once you start exploring, you’ll realize it’s much more than your average flea market. It’s an incredible art-based, constantly evolving marketplace.

Melrose Trading Post is home to 275 local creators, entrepreneurs, professional artists, and other small businesses.

Vendors include rare vintage collectibles, used items, vintage fashion, antique furniture, leather goods, clothing, accessories and more.

You’ll find unique handicrafts, products from a variety of artisans, and innovative pieces, often made from repurposed vintage items.

To boost your creativity, how about a clock made from a classic book or novel?

Some of the booths are reminiscent of a farmers market, with fresh flowers and beautiful living plants for sale.

Multiple stages host weekly live performances featuring local talent including music, poetry, spoken word, dance performances, and live theater. Melrose Morning hosts special family-friendly fun activities each week as the market heats up.

Shoppers enjoy a wide variety of gourmet and international food trucks and vendor booths. There is a picnic area on the lawn, with plenty of tables and umbrellas, where you can refuel, listen to live performances, and relax between shopping trips.

The Marketplace is operated by the nonprofit Greenway Arts Alliance. Proceeds enabled the organization to establish the Greenway Court Theater, a full-production theater and creative space on the school campus, and led to the creation of the Greenway Arts Institute, which provides free arts programs to students .

Melrose Trading Post also serves to provide hands-on training and work experience for volunteers and paid students.

Los Angeles’ weekly market is held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the market, hours of operation, Melrose morning activities, vendors and more, visit the Melrose Trading Post website or Melrose Trading Post on Facebook. Have you been to this arts-focused marketplace in Los Angeles? Let us know what you think in the comments. If you love discovering unique products and independent makers, you’ll love the online marketplace Uncommon Goods (I love the stained glass succulents here!)
