EAST LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A manhunt was underway Monday for a suspect after a security guard was shot and killed during an attempted robbery at a 24-hour marijuana dispensary in East Los Angeles.
The incident happened just before 2 a.m. on Whittier Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
At that time, two men entered the store and attempted to rob the store. Investigators say a shooting incident occurred at some point and a security guard was struck by gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found the unidentified victim shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another employee who was inside the pharmacy at the time was not injured.
It’s unclear if anything was stolen, but authorities said the suspects fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV. No arrests have been made.
Meanwhile, another pharmacy in Whittier was robbed about 30 minutes before the East LA incident.
The sheriff’s office said several masked suspects pointed guns at store employees, destroyed display cases, loaded merchandise and cash into a white Tesla and fled the store.
It is not clear whether the two incidents are related.
