New details have emerged about the death of celebrity health and fitness guru Richard Simmons, who passed away at the age of 76.
A family spokesperson said in a statement that the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office confirmed Simmons’ cause of death at her Los Angeles home in July.
“This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny received a call from the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office,” spokesman Tom Esty said in a statement Wednesday. “The coroner informed Renee that Richard’s death was an accident due to heart disease and complications from a recent fall. Toxicology reports were negative for all but the medications Richard was prescribed. The family would like to thank them for the outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss. ”
The cause of his death had previously been postponed pending investigation by the coroner’s office.
Information provided by Simmons’ family was confirmed by the coroner’s office on Thursday. Simmons reportedly suffered a fall at home on July 11 and spent the next day in bed. Simmons died on July 13 at his home in the Hollywood Hills.
Authorities responded to the residence after receiving a report that Simmons was found unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Simmons was a TV health and fitness staple in the 1980s with her bubbly personality, unwavering positive attitude and seemingly boundless energy, but she hadn’t been seen in public for about a decade. In 2016, he called TODAY after hearing rumors that his housekeeper was holding him hostage.
Simmons gave her final interview to People magazine two days before her death. He was asked about his low profile in recent years.
“Well, I decided to retire because my body told me I needed to retire,” Simmons said. “I’ve spent all my time just looking back on my life. All the books and videos I’ve written. I’ve never thought, ‘Oh, what have I done?'” It was like, “Oh, look how many people I’ve helped.” ”
He also posted a social media message to his fans on his birthday, the day before his death.
“Thank you… this is the first time in my life I have received so many messages about my birthday!” he wrote on July 12th. “I’m sitting here writing an email. I hope you have the most wonderful rest of your Friday!”
Simmons also shared a message on Facebook, telling fans, “So many of you have sent me birthday wishes on my Facebook and other platforms. I really appreciate it. I don’t know, but I pray that he is happy and healthy.” birthday! “
