The pursuit of a kidnapping suspect and victim from the Santa Fe Springs area to Westminster lasted about 105 minutes Saturday before a flat front tire slowed the pace considerably.
The California Highway Patrol became aware of the suspected kidnapping around 6:45 p.m. Saturday and began pursuing an older model white convertible Ford Mustang on the southbound 5 Freeway and Florence Street in the Downey Santa Fe Springs area, CHP troopers said. Sean Locke told City News. service.
Ruff said officers installed spike strips on southbound 605 in the Cerritos area, which flattened two front wheels, significantly slowing the pursuit and disrupting traffic behind.
When the car finally stopped on the freeway at Springdale Street in Westminster, people had gathered on the overpass to watch the chase.
The video showed the man behind the wheel of the Mustang getting out of the car with his hands raised, followed by a woman who appeared to be talking on a cell phone.
The suspect and the alleged victim hugged each other and walked over to waiting CHP officers, who took the man into custody.
The relationship between the suspect and victim was not immediately disclosed.
