Law enforcement officials and animal rights groups are searching for the person or group responsible for shooting and killing several wild parrots in the San Gabriel Valley.
Cleo’s Critter Care, a non-profit organization specializing in animal assistance, has taken in at least 11 injured parrots in the past few weeks. Cleo Watts, who runs the group, said the birds had been shot and injured with pellet guns.
“They’re using guns to hurt animals. It’s already inhumane,” Watts said.
Some of the parrots adopted by the nonprofit organization died from their injuries. In some cases, birds have been shot in the skull or chest, and we’ve even seen one parrot with a pellet stuck in its flank.
Perpetrators of these acts face criminal charges if arrested. In California, shooting a defenseless bird can result in a felony charge of animal cruelty. In Pasadena alone, firing an air rifle within city limits can be considered a misdemeanor.
