Crews extinguished a fire Monday after receiving reports of an explosion at a home in the Santa Susana Knowles neighborhood of Simi Valley.
According to the Ventura County Fire Department, firefighters were called to the 6200 block of Junipero Avenue around 8 p.m. after a fire broke out in the garage of a residence. The incident quickly escalated to a second alert, and the crew requested exposure precautions, the department said.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 30 minutes.
Neighbors told NBC4 they heard a loud bang and an explosion just before flames erupted from the home.
“I heard what sounded like firecrackers, but all I could see was what looked like a 6-meter-high fire. It was just growing and growing and burning everything around it,” he said in the area. said McKenna Coty, who lives in . “I also saw neighbors putting out their hoses and trying to stop it and save whatever they could so everyone could get out.”
According to the fire department, the man and child who were inside the home at the time escaped unharmed. However, the pet dog died in the fire.
Due to the narrow roads in the area, crews had to go to the back of the house to access the fire scene.
“Alleys are usually not good places to conduct attacks because of power lines and all kinds of utilities,” said Captain Brian McGrath of the Ventura County Fire Department. “But it was a good place to launch a fire attack to prevent the fire from spreading.”
Crews said they could not confirm the source of the reported explosion. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
