A man who was one of several injured in a carjacking suspect in Beverly Hills said from his hospital bed that he had no recollection of last week’s horrific events.
Russell Stewart is still recovering from the accident, continuing treatment at Cedars-Sinai. He said he suffered a broken arm, elbow, dislocated triceps and other injuries.
“The list is too long to remember,” he said.
A man carjacked a BMW X3 and drove off in Beverly Hills on Friday, police said. Shortly after, law enforcement received a report of a crash involving the same BMW near Wilshire Boulevard and Camden Drive.
A total of four people, including one child, were injured in the accident. Among them was Stuart, who was the most seriously injured.
The father, a veteran, said he, his wife and 6-year-old daughter were attending the annual Beverly Hills tree lighting ceremony when the incident occurred. He went to buy balloons for his daughter when the accident happened.
“I was walking with my dog, I saw a balloon, I walked up to the vendor, I took the money out of my pocket to pay for the balloon, I bent down to pay for the balloon, I turned the corner and the tire stopped. “I heard a creaking sound and turned my head. For a split second, the lights literally went out and I woke up in the ambulance,” he said.
His dog was crushed under the car but survived. Stewart said her family expects both men to make a full recovery.
James Poetur, 22, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was arrested on suspicion of carjacking.
