In Long Beach, police reportedly shot and killed a person during an armed standoff, and a police officer also suffered a gunshot wound, according to multiple reports.

Details are limited and it’s unclear exactly how the violence unfolded, but Long Beach police officials said on X (formerly Twitter) that the shooting occurred near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and East 52nd Street. He said officers were involved.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel were called to the scene around 5:45 p.m., public information officer Jack Crabtree confirmed to KTLA, adding that two patients required medical treatment.

One of the patients, possibly a police officer, was taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition, and the second was pronounced dead at the scene.

LBPD officers were spotted outside MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center, where the injured officers were reportedly taken, shortly after the ordeal came to a fatal conclusion.

One resident, Anthony Fresula, who spoke to photojournalists from video reporting service OnScene TV, said he walked into the area after hearing all the helicopter sounds.

“I witnessed [police] I talked to him a little bit, and I think his name was Francis, and I witnessed them say, “Francis, are you ready to surrender?” I saw him stand up. “Then I heard two shots ring out, and the next thing I know, more shots rang out,” he said. “The officers were on top of him, cleaned everything up, and then started CPR.”
