The U.S. Attorney’s Office has accused Phillips 66 of violating the federal Clean Water Act by dumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of wastewater from the Carson Oil Refinery into the Los Angeles County sewer system.
The Department of Justice announced Thursday that a federal grand jury returned six indictments against the Houston-based energy company, alleging it violated the Clean Water Act and failed to report its conduct to authorities.
Phillips is charged with two counts of negligent violation of the Clean Water Act and four counts of knowingly violating the Clean Water Act.
The company is scheduled to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles in the coming weeks.
“Protecting our environment is key to protecting our communities,” said U.S. Atty. Martin Estrada. “Like the rest of us, businesses are obligated to follow the law and must be held accountable when they pollute. We will continue to pay close attention to protection.”
This is breaking news and will be updated.
