The Breakers Hotel in Long Beach reopened Tuesday after a multimillion-dollar renovation that was hidden behind fences and scaffolding for seven years.
“We’ve had so many people come through the door, the feeling is ‘wow’,” said Mark Stenge, the hotel’s general manager. “We have tried to preserve as much history as possible and enhance the luxury of the design.”
Stenge added that although the opening is several months behind schedule, it will be well worth the wait.
Built in 1926, every floor of the 14-story building has been completely renovated to celebrate the grandeur of Art Deco and Spanish architecture.
Local company Pacific6, founded by former Molina Healthcare Chief Financial Officer John Molina, purchased the historic Breakers Hotel in November 2017.
“They wanted to preserve this building and make it what it is today,” Stenge said.
The renovation was done in collaboration with the local historical society and focused on preserving as much of the original lobby and main floor as possible. We maintained the classic look and created 185 modern, high-tech rooms, including 22 suites.
The restaurant on the top floor has undergone extensive renovations. The so-called “Sky Room”, which has existed for 86 years, has been revived while preserving its history.
“Clark Gable, Rita Hayward, to name a few, walked through that door,” Stenge said. “Elizabeth Taylor also spent her wedding night here.”
The rooftop bar above the Sky Room has been transformed into a luxurious green and pink Art Deco space, highlighted by feather-design wallpaper and a golden monkey drinks table.
On a clear day, you can see Catalina to the west and the Hollywood sign to the north.
“This is a great piece of Long Beach heritage, and it’s great to see it repurposed,” said Alan Pullman, a local resident and architect who was staying at the hotel during opening weekend. “This is definitely the most beautiful hotel in Long Beach.”
