A speeding drunk driver ran a red light Sunday night, causing a three-vehicle crash that killed two young children, police said.
Rialto police were called to a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Riverside and Walnut streets just after 11 p.m.
A white Honda Accord carrying four people, including two children ages 3 and 4, was making a left turn onto Walnut Street when a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling south on Riverside Boulevard ran a red light. He T-boned the Honda and collided with the car. Police Department Public Information Officer Rusty Lamb said the tow truck.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, identified by police as Alexis Garcia, 28, of San Bernardino, fled the scene, officials said.
Police said two children were seated in the car, but one was thrown from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 24-year-old female driver and 25-year-old male passenger in the Honda Accord suffered mild to moderate injuries and were taken to a local trauma center, Lamb said. Those involved have not released their names.
The tow truck driver was not injured, authorities said.
Photos of the incident shared on the police department’s Instagram page showed children’s clothes and toys scattered at the intersection after the crash.
Rialto police said officers later located the Dodge Ram and Garcia 400 meters from the scene of the incident, where the truck appeared to be disabled. He was arrested by police and booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of murder, DUI, and hit-and-run.
Police said there was a passenger in Garcia’s car at the time of the crash, but he was not injured.
