The Burbank family is fighting to save their dog Conan, who is in danger of being euthanized after biting a woman who tried to protect her owner.

Conan’s current caretakers, Nelson Grande and Sylvia Franco, claim the 8-year-old pit bull acted in protection and self-defense against a neighbor who had allegedly been harassing him for months. I am doing it.

Conan’s fate will be decided at an appeals court Tuesday afternoon.

Family spokeswoman Sheila Scott-Astroff said Conan was walking with his “mom” in the alley next to their Burbank home in January when a neighbor came up to Franco and bit him in the face, killing the puppy. It is said that he gave a warning and bit him.

Scott Astroff said the woman had been tormenting the dog for some time through the gate of her home, screaming, yelling and cursing at it.

“If a dog is provoked, they have every right to protect themselves and their owners,” Scott Astrof says. “You can’t punish them for that.”

In July, the city of Burbank deemed Conan dangerous and requested that he be euthanized. The puppy has since gained attention online, with supporters claiming it was against the law to euthanize Conan.

KTLA’s Rachel Menitoff met with the family on Monday and said they consider Conan more of a grandson than anything else.

“Our son moved out, so he basically took up some mental space. When the kids moved out, he filled it,” Grande said.

Grande’s late mother encouraged them to adopt Conan, who was part of a large litter of kittens and was at risk of being put to sleep.

“This was a gift from his mother before she passed away, and it makes him feel even more important to us because it’s a gift,” Franco said.

The couple said their life without Conan is unfathomable.

“I can’t live without him,” Grande said. “I don’t want to think about being without him.”

According to Burbank’s ordinance, “an animal shall be declared dangerous or clingy if there is teasing, torture, abuse, or assault against an animal for the purpose of protecting a person from unreasonable attack or against the animal.” isn’t it”.

Conan’s final appeal will be held in downtown Los Angeles at 1:30 p.m., with his owners testifying along with a dog behaviorist from Florida.

KTLA reached out to the city of Burbank and the city attorney, who said they cannot comment on pending litigation.
