With Thanksgiving approaching, airline passengers across the United States are entering one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Most people arrive at their destination on time with little or no problems. However, with tens of thousands of flights operating every day, it is inevitable that the system will experience some issues.
So what are the chances of being late? FlightAware’s famous Misery Map is a great way to track your most important delays and cancellations in real time. But statistically, certain airports in the United States are more notorious than others.
According to Insure My Trip, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) had the highest flight delay rate through June of this year at 37%. The travel insurance site analyzed flight delay and cancellation data from the Department of Transportation and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
Puerto Rico’s San Juan, Marin International Airport (SJU), Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), and Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) airports also have the highest delays.

Newark Liberty International (EWR) is usually at or near the top of the list, but this year’s analysis found it to be one of the most improved airports. Los Angeles International Airport’s delay rate in 2023 was 20.5%.
Conversely, these airports have the lowest percentage of delays.
