A domestic violence suspect who led police on a chase from San Pedro to the West Adams area, where he exchanged gunfire with officers, died from his injuries Wednesday.
Andre Jones, 37, was hospitalized and pronounced dead Wednesday after a shooting in the 3000 block of West Boulevard early Tuesday afternoon, Los Angeles police said.
According to police, officers responded to a call from a DASH bus driver about a domestic violence suspect chasing the bus in a white Maserati around 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday at South Guffey Street and West 19th Street. First dispatched to the area. The driver of the bus, the alleged victim, told police that the suspect was armed.
Police said the bus driver and Jones had previously been in a relationship and had children together.
Police said a responding officer spotted Jones’ vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but Jones sped away and began a pursuit north on the Harbor (110) Freeway. .
Officers pursued the suspect down a main street in the Ladera Heights neighborhood, eventually entering a residential area near West Boulevard and Jefferson Boulevard.
The suspect then pulled into the driveway, parked his Maserati behind the apartment building, and casually walked back along the driveway toward the street where police were waiting. Video from the scene showed the suspect with his arms raised and a gun in each hand appearing to point at the officer, who returned fire and injured the suspect. Police said Jones “fired multiple shots at the officers.”
Jones was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital, where he died Wednesday.
A female bystander, who was believed to have been approaching the suspect from an apartment building when the shooting erupted, suffered what officers described as a gunshot wound to the arm and was later treated by paramedics at the scene. Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell said the person was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Some media reports said the injured woman was the suspect’s mother.
Two other women were also arrested at the scene, but their involvement was unclear.
Two 9mm semi-automatic handguns were recovered next to Jones at the scene of the shooting, Los Angeles police said.
McDonnell said no officers were injured and it was unclear exactly how many people fired shots or how many shots were fired in total.
“It was a very quick response. Fortunately, no officers were injured during this time, but these types of incidents are just a reminder of what our officers face every day on the scene and trying to do what they have to do.” “It shows you’re confronting a suspect and try to run away,” McDonnell said.
A woman who lives in the apartment where the shooting occurred told reporters that the suspect’s parents live at the scene and that the suspect had been there before.
“We just met by chance. We just said ‘hello.’ He was always kind,” the woman said. “And his parents are nice. I’ve never seen him yelling or screaming (arguing). Of course it’s his mother’s house, so if he’s somewhere else… I don’t know if they were doing something. They’re always nice when I see him, and this is really bad.”
