The Los Angeles-based nonprofit turned a portion of Skid Row into a block party this Thanksgiving, providing meals to unhoused individuals and families as part of its annual tradition.

One Midnight Mission volunteer said he returns year after year to serve strangers and becomes friends with them.

“I’ve been coming here for about seven years and it’s been a really great experience feeding people and seeing smiles everywhere,” volunteer Phil Fineman said. “I had a good workout, I got Schmutz on my shirt, and I feel really good here.”

Organizers said the event was a huge success and was made possible by generous donations from hundreds of businesses and community volunteers.

“We’re enjoying our vacation and we’re eating because we didn’t have any,” guest Dana Knowles said. “And they come to spend the holidays with strangers.”

Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and holiday desserts were all among the supplies many families said they would not enjoy outside of this event.

“It’s delicious,” another guest told KTLA’s Karine Winter. “[The volunteers] Everyone is an angel. ”

Midnight Mission has been helping individuals for decades and partners with large corporations as well as celebrities who give back this Thanksgiving.

“Midnight Mission is always here watching over us,” said guest Terrell Baker. “So we thank them, we bless them, and we just ask God to protect you all.”

Organizers say no one goes home hungry and many are energized by a day of festivities that make the holiday more meaningful.

Another guest said: “The spirit of Thanksgiving, this is it.”
