A wildfire that started on Thanksgiving Day and burned dangerously close homes in Riverside County grew significantly overnight.
The Canyon Crest Fire had burned 250 acres as of 6 a.m. Friday, Cal Fire officials said in an update.
The fire started as a 100-by-100-foot wind-driven ignition south of the 60 Freeway in Riverside County and had spread to 85 acres by Thursday night.
“This fire started just south of the Riverside-San Bernardino county line and burned south toward Riverside County,” San Bernardino County Fire Department spokesman Christopher Prater said in a statement. .

As of Friday morning, the containment rate remained at zero percent, but authorities are confident the situation will change.
“Control and containment will certainly increase throughout the day, and we will hopefully be able to provide more updated numbers by this afternoon,” Cal Fire Chief Bryson Keener said Friday.
The fire burned near several homes Thursday evening, and authorities issued evacuation warnings for the following areas:

“If an evacuation order is issued, prepare to evacuate. Prepare your belongings. Carry important documents and pets with you in case you are asked to evacuate, and plan your evacuation route. please,” Prater said.
The care and reception center has opened at Jurupa Valley High School, 10551 Belgrave Avenue in Jurupa Valley.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
