COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Michigan State players planted a team flag over Ohio State’s midfield and exchanges between players from both teams after a 13-10 win over No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday afternoon. A scuffle broke out and police attempted to separate the teams. And pepper spray is being used.

Video of the incident by NBC4 and others showed Michigan players huddled at midfield after time expired. With encouragement from teammates, offensive lineman Raheem Anderson and running back Terrence Dunlap raise a flag as Ohio State sings “Carmen Ohio” with the band after losing four straight in the series. The players immediately greeted him.

Big Ten and other playoff scenarios after Ohio State loses to Michigan

The players began scuffling, and police tried to separate the two sides. A fight for control of the flag began when Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer ripped it from the pole and threw it onto the field. Cornerback Davison Igbinosun retrieved it and a person in Michigan gear attempted to leave with it before going to retrieve it, leading to further scuffles.

Day gave few details in his postgame press conference, and it wasn’t immediately clear if any players were injured.

“I know they were trying to put a flag on the field, but our players weren’t going to let that happen,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said.

Athletic director Ross Bjork declined to comment on the incident.

The win was Michigan’s fourth straight in the series, with Ohio State’s last win coming in 2019. The Buckeyes fell to 10-2, missing out on a spot in the Big Ten championship game. They remain in strong contention for a spot in the College Football Playoff, which is in its first year of expansion to include 12 teams.

Ohio State’s next game will likely be in the first round of the playoffs on Dec. 20 or 21. The University of Michigan improved to 7-5 and will play in a bowl game next.
