Santa Ana Police Department officers shot and killed a man Sunday evening who was believed to be carrying a loaded rifle, officials said.
However, police confirmed that the rifle was later determined to be fake.
According to the department, around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, officers received a report of a man armed with a loaded rifle in the area of Broadway and Second Avenue.
Then, at 6:22 p.m., SAPD issued a notice on X (formerly Twitter) warning the public to stay away from police activity in the same area.
Police say an officer approached the suspect and opened fire.
After the shooting, the man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
Police identified the suspect as a man in his early 30s, but did not release his name or place of residence.
The rifle was later recovered by police and later discovered to be fake.
