What you need to know

Nathan Hockman will be sworn in as the 44th District Attorney of Los Angeles County. Hochman defeated incumbent George Gascón in last month’s election. The 61-year-old former federal prosecutor is running as an independent and vows to be tougher on crime.

Los Angeles County’s new top prosecutor will be sworn in and sworn in at a Judicial Hall of Fame ceremony in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Nathan Hockman defeated incumbent George Gascon in last month’s election. Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will administer the oath, making Hochman the county’s 44th district attorney.

The oath is scheduled for noon.

The 61-year-old former federal prosecutor had sought to become state attorney general as a Republican in 2022, but this time he is running as an independent.

Mr. Hockman will take on what amounts to a tough-on-crime mandate from Los Angeles County voters. According to the latest voting results, Mr. Hoffmann received more than 1.9 million votes (just under 60%) compared to Mr. Gascón’s 1.3 million votes. Gascón conceded defeat on November 6, the day after the election.

Gascón took office four years ago on a progressive platform, but Hochman has accused Gascón of being soft on crime as high-profile robberies, assaults and murders hit the headlines. became a target of critics. Mr Gascón denied that his policies had led to an increase in crime and defended his record, arguing that statistics actually showed declines in many areas.

According to the California Department of Justice, violent crime increased by about 8% countywide from 2019 to 2023, but in Los Angeles, violent crime decreased by about 6%.

Gascón survived two recall attempts.

In the weeks leading up to Election Day on Nov. 5, Mr. Gascón announced that he supported the outrage of the Menendez brothers, who served life sentences for killing their parents with a shotgun in their Beverly Hills mansion in 1989. A judge last week postponed ruling on the matter until January, giving Hochman time to consider the case.
