Beachgoers alerted to shark sightings off Huntington Beach

Lifeguards are notifying swimmers about two sharks recently spotted by fishermen off Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach lifeguards posted on Instagram that the two juvenile sharks were briefly captured by fishermen, but they bit the line and escaped and returned to the ocean.

“These sightings remind us that the ocean is their home and we share this ocean with all kinds of marine life,” the post reads.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department Marine Safety Division requested assistance from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to conduct a patrol check. Authorities also worked with an HB-1 police helicopter to fly over the area.

No sharks were observed during these inspections, but HB Lifeguards said the area will continue to be monitored with increased patrols.

Lifeguards provided the following shark safety tips to minimize risk:

Swim, surf, or dive with others and don’t stray too far from assistance. Stay out of the water at dawn, dusk, and night, as sharks may migrate inshore in search of food. If it is open, do not enter the water. There is a wound or it is bleeding in some way. Sharks can sense extremely low concentrations of blood and body fluids. Avoid murky water, harbor entrances, near estuaries (especially after heavy rain), waterways, or steep downhill slopes. These waters are known to be frequented by sharks. Avoid wearing high-contrast clothing or shiny jewelry. Sharks perceive contrast well. Please refrain from excessive splashing. Sharks are known to be attracted to such activities. If you see a shark, quickly and quietly leave the water. Never provoke or harass sharks, even small ones. Be aware of the presence of dolphins, which are prey for some large sharks. Do not swim near people fishing. Do not approach dead animals in the water. When swimming or surfing, stay close to lifeguards and follow their advice.

“Our Ocean Safety Lifeguards are dedicated to ensuring a safe and enjoyable beach experience. Stay informed, stay safe and respect the ocean and its wonderful inhabitants,” HB Lifeguards is written in the post.
