Several abandoned dogs were found and rescued across the Inland Empire this week, all with severely disheveled coats and in poor condition.
At least eight of the dogs were recovered within days, along with eight pounds of dreadlocks. Monique Middleton, executive director of Animal Friends of the Valley, said some of the dogs had unruly coats and were unable to walk due to their weight.
“These horrible dreadlocks are matted against the skin,” Middleton said. “Even when I tried to shave it, it was so painful that I had to be sedated.”
The discovery of these abandoned dogs began on November 25th when a caller reported finding a dog near Kursula Road in Menifee.
“When we got there, it was literally one of the worst I’ve ever seen,” Middleton said. “This dog had dreadlocks hanging out the size of my fist. He couldn’t even walk.”
After that, I kept receiving similar calls.
“I got a call from Lake Elsinore and (the caller) said, ‘I found a dog that really doesn’t have any fluff.'” You have to understand that,” Middleton recalled. “My team went to get it. Same thing. Same breed, same fear, welfare conditions.”
In one week, eight dogs were rescued from various parts of the Inland Empire, including Fontana and Riverside.
Mr Middleton said anyone who left a dog in a situation like this should definitely be punished.
“There are some charges like animal cruelty, which can be charged as a felony for each dog,” Middleton said. “The second charge that can be filed is abandonment. It is illegal to drop a dog on the side of the road.”
Some dogs are adopted, but others require medical treatment before finding their forever homes.
“One of them turned out to have an eye infection in addition to the mat issue. The other is an elderly person who has cataracts,” Middleton explained.
The animal shelter believes all the dogs are likely terriers and is actively searching for owners.
