The 13-year-old boy was arrested on charges allegedly illuminating the fireworks that launched a Rancho fire in Laguna Beach.
The fire, which forced evacuation before firefighters could gain control, grew to about four acres, was tied to fireworks reports by several witnesses before smoke could be seen near Morningside Drive and Rancho Laguna Road.
“As the flames spread along Rancho Laguna Hillside, multiple witnesses reported seeing the boy in areas that could be involved in the fireworks,” the Laguna Beach Police Department said in a news release.
The boy whose identity has not been released was arrested Monday after two other young people were questioned by officers and “decided to be a witness, not a suspect.”
“After hours of investigation, detectives identified the juveniles responsible and obtained a search warrant for his arrest and seizure of electronic devices,” police said, adding that they also obtained a video of the 13-year-old exploding fireworks.
“This case is a perfect example of what makes Laguna Beach unique: a passionate community working with the police department,” Chief Jeff Calvert said in the release. “When our residents speak out, we can respond quickly and effectively. Public safety is a common responsibility, and this outcome reflects that.”
The boy faces a felony charge of reckless burning in a woodland, but “the Orange County Juvenile Hall will not accept reservation suspects due to no injuries or immediate threat to the structure.”
He was disposed at Laguna Beach Police Station and released by his parents, officials added.
The case was filed with the OC District Attorney’s Office to file a possible claim.
