The 9-year-old died in a false collision that involved suspected DUI drivers in Antelope Valley.
On July 30th, California Highway Patrol Officers responded to a crash on the 200th Street East, just south of Avenue G, at 5:45pm.
Investigation revealed that suspect Christian Powell, 23, of Victorville, was driving a Dodge Challenger southbound on the 200th Street.
When Powell noticed, he piloted to the left to avoid hitting an approaching Honda in the opposite lane. To avoid any impact, the Honda driver also proceeded to the right, reflecting the suspect’s direction before both vehicles collided directly head-on.
The Honda was driven by Irene Mendoza, 19, of Lancaster. Inside her car were two passengers, a 9-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.
The 9-year-old boy, identified as Israeli Mendoza, was declared dead at the scene. The 14-year-old was seriously injured and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Powell was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
“Everyone involved in the crash had worn seat belts, but it is being investigated whether the seat belts were properly worn,” authorities said.
Anyone with information about the crash will be asked to call CHP’s Antelope Valley Area Office at 661-743-6060 during business hours. After opening hours, the public can call the Los Angeles Traffic Management Center at 323-259-3200.
