A Berkeley, California student, a few weeks after graduation, was paralyzed from his lower back after a recent fall at a college fraternity event.
Bandna Bhatti’s family told KTVU on April 19 that Bhatti fell down the stairs at Phi Kappa Tau on Piedmont Avenue. She was found 15 minutes later, but she didn’t know how bad her injuries were. 911 was called seven hours later.
Bhatti, 21, is paralyzed from the waist down, has a spinal fracture and a cerebral hematoma, according to GoFundMe, which was created to cover her medical expenses.
“These injuries not only change your life, they also require extensive and continuous medical care, including physical therapy, rehabilitation and professional support that will help her navigate this new chapter,” the webpage said.
According to GoFundMe, Bhatti was completing a data science degree just three weeks after graduating from university.
“Bandna is a shining, caring, resilient young woman who has worked tirelessly towards her dreams. Now she faces a long and difficult path,” the fundraiser said.
A university spokesperson told Kron4 that the Berkeley Police Department was investigating the incident.
“UC Berkeley is aware of the ongoing police investigation into reports of students being injured in fraternity or fraternity,” the statement said. “Our idea is that throughout this time we are students, their families, their loved ones and friends.”
