Bill Essay, a US lawyer for the Central District of California, says a California State University Channel Islands professor who was detained during a protest of immigration attacks in Camarillo on Thursday will be charged with the federal government.
The California Undergraduate Association first assumed that Professor Jonathan Anthony Caravelo was “invited” by federal agents amid unrest in a social media post Thursday. The post showed that the professor, a lecturer in mathematics and philosophy, was filmed by a federal agent who has not identified himself and has not revealed where they are taking him.
On Sunday, CSUCI issued a statement saying staff were aware of reports that Professor Caravello was in custody.
“At this point, we understand that Professor Caravero was peacefully involved in the protest, which protects the rights that are protected under the First Amendment and guaranteed to all Americans,” the statement said. “If confirmed, we are standing there saying that elected officials and community leaders are seeking his immediate release.”

Another post published Saturday by the California Faculty Association showed he was found, but no further information was revealed.
Professor Jonathan Caravelo of California State University Channel Islands can be seen in photos on the CSUCI faculty directory page.
But US lawyer Bill Essay said late Sunday morning that Caravero’s actions were not peaceful. Reposting a KTLA article on the CSUCI statement on his X page, the essayre said that Caravelo dismissed the claim that he was “being tempted” and threw a tear gas canister at law enforcement.
“He has been charged with a violation of 18 USC 111 and is scheduled to appear in court. [Monday]The essay said.
According to federal law, those charged with violations of US Criminal Code 18 USC 111 are accused of “assaulting, resisting or obstructing a particular officer or employee.”
