The child died while attending a summer camp at King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas on Wednesday, according to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Agency.
The LA County Fire Department responded to a call in the 26,000 block of Mulholland Highway just before 3pm, reporting fallen trees and injured multiple people, according to department spokesman Jonathan Torres.
Upon arrival, officers found five injured people. One person was airlifted to hospital in dangerous conditions, while the other two suffered moderate injuries, Torres said.
A department spokesperson said a murder detective from the LA County Sheriff’s Department was investigating the death.
“My heart is directed at my family with this overwhelming and devastating loss,” Joseph T. Edmiston, executive officer of the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Department, said in a statement.
A report from KTLA News revealed that thick tree branches roared by groups of picnic tables near where a summer camp called Camp Wildcraft was taking place.
The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Department, which manages the 588-acre park land in the Santa Monica Mountains, said the safety and well-being of children is always a top priority.
“We work closely with the Los Angeles County Sheriff and the appropriate agencies to understand exactly what happened,” the officials said.
LA County Superintendent Lindsey Horvath issued a statement saying, “My heart is with everyone affected by this tragic situation.”
Horvath said her office works to communicate closely with the sheriff and fire department and provide assistance.
“We think about everyone and pray for their safety,” she said.
