When Officer Christopher Martinez traded Sunshine for the Swamp and Empire State, he didn’t expect to squeeze “par” with scale and long tail.
Martinez joined the Largo Police Station in November and transferred from New York.
Adorned with blue latex gloves, Martinez approached the rookie-wiggling gator at his first stake. He paused, took a deep breath and muttered to the reptile. “You have big teeth. I have small fingers.”
His fellow officer, the veteran Florida Gator Handler, cheered on him with gentle reminders such as “Don’t drop him” and “He’s so cute.”
Just as Martinez had taken a crocodile badly from a colleague, the creature turned its tail over and freed Hiss. Queue your high-pitched “Ahhh…oh my god!”
Nevertheless, in a true heroic form, he thrusts it out to take the picture.
“For God’s love, take a picture of me,” Martinez said, pose and gave a nervous smile for the camera.
The video has since received over 2 million views, and the Largo Police Department couldn’t resist calling it an “official welcome to Florida.”
