A group of rehabilitated Pelicans soared through the San Pedro sky as they returned to the wild on Wednesday.
International Barrescue, a conservation group that cares about wild birds, has been caring for a California Brown Pelican group after some people were found to be injured and starved. Since March, the organization has recognized more than 250 sick brown pelicans.
Patients in rescue care range from fledgling to adults. Some people have become ill due to domain acid poisoning. The toxic algae Bloom has made several marine animals off the coast of Southern California, including wild birds, sea lions and elephant seals.
After weeks of rehabilitation, several Pelicans graduated from their care and were released in San Pedro. A heartwarming release video showed that a line of volunteers opens the crate and now gives freedom to healthy birds.
“These birds survived a dangerous mix of domo acid poisoning and starvation. The return to the wild is a hopeful sign for all of us who care not only about their species but also about our marine health.”
