The local firefighters coalition said on social media that more than 20 people were taken to hospital Thursday after an apparent overdose in Baltimore.
The fire department responded Thursday morning with a “large casualty incident involving multiple individuals showing overdose symptoms” in a neighborhood in northern Penn, according to the International Association of Firefighters’ Baltimore Force.
John Marsh, a spokesman for the Baltimore Fire Department, said at least 25 people had been taken to the hospital.
NBC News affiliate WBAL-TV reported that five people are in crisis.
It was not immediately clear what they overdose or what most of their conditions were.
The Baltimore City Health Department said on Facebook it also responded to overdose events. The department was distributing naloxone, a drug that could reverse overdose across the neighborhood.
Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace told Wbal that the number of casualties is expected to change as other overdose from the area has been identified.
According to Wbal, Baltimore Police Deputy Director Kevin Jones said the agency has experienced a medical emergency and is in the area looking for others who are treating the area as an active crime scene.
