The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recalls a pool of around 5 million people on the ground due to potential drowning after nine children died over 15 years.
The recall affects pools below 48 inches using compression straps. These straps wrap around the pool outside the support pole, creating scaffolding and allow children to access the pool even if the ladder is removed and owned.
At least nine children under the age of 3 are in possession in the pool and believe CPSC has accessed through compression straps. The incident occurred between 2007 and 2022 in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri.
The CPSC also said it is aware of three other incidents in 2011 and 2012, in which children who accessed the recalled pool previously reportedly had gained entry into the pool using compression straps.
The affected models include ground pools under 48 inches under the brand names Bestway, Coleman, Intel and Polygroup, according to a release from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
This product is sold at a variety of retailers including Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowes, Kmart, Toys “R” Us, Sam’s Club, The Home Depot, Big Lots, Costco, BJ, Amazon.com, Wayfair.com, Bestway USA, Intex, Funsicle, and Summer Waves website online.
Recalled pool prices range from around $400 to over $1,000.
Consumers should immediately contact Bestway, Intex and Polygroup to request a free repair kit. In the interim, consumers should ensure that children do not have access to the unattended pool. Alternatively, drain the pool until repairs are installed.
