California Highway Patrol troopers encounter many dire situations on the job, but I’d wager that helping a driver safely deliver a newborn is not the most common.
In what CHP officials called a “freeway miracle” on social media, a 38-week pregnant woman was seen doing just that by three people on Highway 15 in San Bernardino County on Nov. 20. Police officers assisted.
The new mother and her sister, identified only as Mrs. Accardo, were on their way to the hospital while in labor.

It is unclear what happened while the mother, baby, and aunt were in transit, prompting the emergency response, but CHP officers Zamora, Rafael, and Carrillo arrived on the scene shortly after they were dispatched and said they were “on the highway.” The roadside was turned into a makeshift delivery room,” an official detailed.

According to social media posts, three police officers supported Accardo during her labor until she was safely transported to the hospital.
In photos taken from the hospital, both mother and daughter appeared to be doing well.
“Thanks to their quick action, both Mom and Isabel were safe,” officials said. “Welcome to this world, little one. You’ve already come a long way!”
