Authorities began searching along the Palos Verdes Peninsula Thursday, a day after a human foot washed up on the shoreline.
The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department said in a written statement that the limb was found in the 800 block of Paseo del Mar. This was the same spot where two fishermen’s capsized boat washed ashore earlier this week. No other details about the body parts were disclosed in the statement.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s cadaver dog thoroughly searched the area for additional remains, but none were found, the department said.
The Los Angeles County coroner will determine the identity of the body and whether its limbs are related to the Dec. 23 boat capsizing accident, law enforcement officials said.
Police said the men went fishing Monday afternoon in a small boat from San Pedro. Forecasters had issued a small craft advisory that day, warning boaters in Los Angeles County that waves up to 10 feet high were possible.
The men did not return from fishing and were reported missing the next morning. Shortly afterward, someone found the capsized boat along the rocky shores of Palos Verdes Estates, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Coastguards searched and rescued the two men on Christmas Eve, but were forced to cancel the operation the following day due to dangerous waves and strong winds.
The boaters’ disappearance comes during a week when the historic Santa Cruz Pier was damaged by heavy waves and a man died after being caught in debris from high waves in Monterey Bay.
The discovery of the legs marks the second time human remains have been found washed up in the same area. Last month, human skulls and bones washed ashore in the same area. Coroner’s officials have not identified the bodies.
