A Ventura County man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for violent assault and temptation by his girlfriend.

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office has announced that Pena Martinez, 44, of Salvador, was convicted of the crime on July 21.

On May 17, 2020, Martinez attacked his girlfriend during a discussion about mobile phones. He repeatedly punches her, pulls her into her hair, smacks her with his cell phone, suffocating her until she dies, and pins her in his lap, court documents said.

Martinez then pushed her into his truck and continued to assault her while driving. When they arrive at his cousin’s house in Port Funeme, the woman manages to escape, screaming for help, saying that Martinez will kill her.

The man’s family called the police, but Martinez fled the scene before officers arrived. The woman was taken to the hospital with a concussion, a bruise on her face and a wound to her head.

On May 20, 2020, a fire broke out at a woman’s Oxnard home. Investigators found that gas cans canned the cans at the scene and showed them a white pickup truck driving in the area, similar to that of Martinez.

Three days later, Martinez was arrested and arrested for domestic violence attacks. However, he was released on bail five days later.

On June 4th, police found him driving and tried to pull him apart in connection with the arson incident. Martinez refused to stop and led the officers through Oxnard in a dangerous pursuit. During the pursuit, he abandoned the moving truck and fled on foot.

Officers chased him, resisted arrest and secured the officer’s arm before he was taken into custody. A loaded semi-automatic handgun was also found in his truck.

On April 21, Martinez pleaded guilty to physical injuries, tricks, crime threats, arson in residential structures, evasion of officers and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He also admitted dozens of special allegations, including the crime causing serious physical injuries, the victim was vulnerable and caused previous strikes.

On July 21, he was sentenced to 25 years and four months in prison for the crime.

“While the physical and emotional wounds of such a brutal attack may remain, I admire the immense resilience and courage demonstrated by the victim and her family through this tragic ordeal,” said Ventura County District Attorney Recall Kelly, who indicted the case. “We hope that as this case is resolved, they can begin the healing and rebuilding their lives.
