A large brown bear roaming a residential area near Verdugo Road on Friday morning surprised residents and elicited a prompt response from Glendale police and wildlife officials.
The encounter unfolded around 10:30am when Rich Paul, a Glendale resident, met up with a bear while walking down the driveway. “I was just walking down the driveway and suddenly I saw this big brown bear right in front of me,” recalls Paul. Anxious, he immediately called 911 to report the sighting.

Officers arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and were also able to find the bear. Paul said police are polite and professional and are quick to assess the situation.
According to Pawl, the bear then moved aimlessly through the neighborhood, emerged from the garden, jumped over the hedges and over the busy six-lane Verdugo Road. The animals disappeared behind the building across the street, narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic before finally climbing the nearby hillside.
Glendale Police Station Sgt. Baraja confirmed the police officer who found the bear during the response. The bear has a yellow tag on its ear, indicating it is known to local wildlife authorities. Sergeant. Balaja said the department contacted California fish and wildlife officials.

“The bear had been seen for a period of time and then disappeared. No one attacked or injured,” Balaja said.
Bear sightings are rare in Glendale, but residents are reminded to quickly report sightings to local authorities to ensure trash and food sources, stay away from wildlife and ensure public safety.
