An investigation is underway following a shooting involving Southgate police officers who left the death of an armed robber at Walnut Park.
Police were called at the intersection of Walnut Street and Seville Avenue around 12:30pm on Wednesday. Officers arrive to investigate the armed robbery and find the alleged burglar.
“He was in the car. When they tried to contact him, he produced a firearm and a shooting involving an officer. The man was hit by the shooting and was declared dead at the scene,” said Daniel Vizkalachu.
Police also said the armed robbery happened a few days before the shooting.
It is unknown what caused the police to shoot the man.
Authorities said two pistols and a shell of bullets were next to the suspected robber vehicle.
“When I saw every helicopter in the air, I knew something serious had happened.
Neighbors in the area say they were shaken by the shooting.
“I live in this area so I’m living here now, I live here, they live here and they live here and they have family at home, so I’m worried,” said Sandra Lopez, who lives nearby.
Details of the suspect were not immediately available. The shooting is still under investigation.
