Garbage collector Douglas Kicker, who touched his heart with the voice of the song “American Idol,” has passed away, his family announced on social media.
His sister, Angela Evans, announced Kiker’s death in a Facebook post Wednesday. Another family member, Donna Kicker Carillos Ramirez, remembered him as a “great person.”
“He had the biggest smile and knew how to make you laugh,” she wrote.
He was 32 years old, NBC News reports.

When he auditioned for the 18th season of “American Idol” in 2019, Kiker told the judge that he was a garbage man.
Before he was allowed to sing the notes, Judge Lionel Richie told Keeker to go outside “warm up.” Host Ryan Seacrest walked along the streets of Savannah, Georgia with Kicker, where auditions were being held, so Kicker encouraged him to sing in front of a small crowd.
When he returned to the audition room, Kiker was able to tell the judges he had “some degree of experience.”
Luke Bryan, another judge on the panel along with Richie and Katy Perry, jumped to the piano to perform while Kicker was singing. It first gave the garbage man another: sing with musical accompaniment.

“I don’t know how to go with that, but I could give it a try,” Kikar said.
His subsequent rendition of Rascal Flats’ “Bless the Broken Road” moved Perry to tears, urging all the judges to move him into the next race.

Kiker didn’t do that far in the competition, but he was eliminated before the contestants were narrowed down to the top 40 of “Showcase Round.”
Representatives of ABC and “American Idol” did not immediately respond to Nexstar’s request for comment. The show is currently airing its 23rd season.
