Authorities have identified two skeletal bodies found near the Ventura County trail and determined that both died from gunshot wounds in apparent murder and suicide.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s main crime force was sent to the Sunrise Trail and Autumn Trail areas after hikers called Sunday to report the discovery of what appears to be the skeletonized human remains.
The finding was later confirmed by the Ventura County Examination Office office to be the remains of two sets of human beings, a man and a woman, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
“After examining the bodies, the medical inspector’s office actively identified the individual as Jose Luis Perez and Stephanie Elizabeth Perez, determining that both of them died from gunshot wounds,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Stephanie Elizabeth Perez, 65, was listed as a murder victim in a news release. Jose Luis Perez’s death was called a suicide. Both were from Shimi Valley.
“This looks like an isolated incident. Subjects are known to each other and reportedly disappeared in July 2024,” the Sheriff’s Department said.
Anyone with more information was asked to contact Det. Delacerda at 805 384-4724.
